Smokefree Homes & Cars

Most people are aware that smoking is detrimental to health, but many people are unaware of the unseen damage that smoking does. Public Health England (PHE’s) recently ran its Smokefree Health Harms campaign designed to encourage the nation’s 7 million smokers to make a quit attempt.

The TV advert illustrates how poisons from tar in cigarettes enter the bloodstream, spreading around the body in seconds, causing damage to major organs, as data reveals one person in England is admitted to hospital every minute with a smoking related illness.

To help explain the ongoing internal harm being caused, a group of seven lifelong smokers – including TV presenter and entrepreneur Hilary Devey declare their intention to quit after seeing the results of a lab demonstration.

When you smoke you not only cause harm to yourself you also produce second hand smoke which can be harmful to those around you. This is particularly true of babies and children whose lungs are still developing and pets whose senses are often more sensitive than our own.

In fact more than 80% of secondhand smoke is invisible and odourless. This means that even if you smoke out of a window or door the majority of smoke will flow back into the room so no matter how careful you think you’re being, your family still breathes in harmful poisons, putting them at risk of conditions such as meningitis, cancer, bronchitis and pneumonia.

The best thing you can do is to stop smoking completely, but if this feels like it would be too difficult you can start by making your home and car smokefree and committing to only ever smoke when you are outside.

This is when our Smokefree Homes and Cars pledge can help! Signing our pledge to not smoke in the home or car to protect the lungs or your children and pets can be a great way towards eventually stopping smoking all together.
